Dunwoody to celebrate Georgia Arbor Day
The celebration of Georgia Arbor Day in Dunwoody will engage a large volunteer force and extend across two days, beginning February 21.
Dunwoody, GA – February 6, 2020 – The City of Dunwoody will collaborate with Trees Atlanta, the Arbor Day Foundation, the Georgia Forestry Commission and the Dunwoody Community Garden & Orchard (DCGO) to celebrate Georgia Arbor Day, observed this year on February 21.
The celebration will begin at 10 a.m. on the 21st with a ceremonial tree planting at Dunwoody’s N. Shallowford Annex, located at 4470 N. Shallowford Road. Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch will be joined by members of the City Council, Arbor Day Foundation President Dan Lambe, Georgia Forestry Commission Director Chuck Willims, Dunwoody Parks & Recreation staff and members of the Dunwoody Sustainability Committee.
“Dunwoody’s tree canopy is critical to the environment and the economy,” said Mayor Deutsch. “Trees improve air and water quality and reduce erosion. They also make our community beautiful and inviting.”
On February 21 and 22, the DCGO will host a tree sale at the Brook Run Park Greenhouse from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Georgia Forestry Commission is donating 100 willow oak tree seedlings for the sale. Trees grown at the greenhouse will also be on sale.
Registration is now open for volunteers of all ages to help plant 200 trees around the new multi-sport fields in the back of Brook Run Park. The planting, led by Trees Atlanta, will take place on Saturday, February 22 from 9 a.m. to noon. Trees will also be planted at Dunwoody High School. These are in addition to the 200 trees planted by volunteers during Dunwoody’s MLK, Jr. Day of Service on January 20.
In Georgia, Arbor Day is observed annually on the third Friday of February, in keeping with the planting season for trees in South. Arbor Day is celebrated across the country on the last Friday in April.
