Chamblee Dunwoody Road Georgetown Gateway
Project details:
The Chamblee Dunwoody Georgetown Gateway Project creates a more welcoming environment for pedestrians and bicycles, and serve as a signature gateway for one of the primary entrances into Dunwoody. The project extended the Dunwoody Trailway in both directions along Chamblee Dunwoody Road from Georgetown Park and created a consistent streetscape to enhance the visual appeal, walkability, and safety of the corridor. The streetscape includes street trees, pedestrian lighting, and wider sidewalks.
The improvements were first identified in the Georgetown-North Shallowford Master Plan. The project extends along Chamblee Dunwoody from I-285 to just south of the North Shallowford Road intersection. This segment of Chamblee Dunwoody Road is an important corridor for thousands of Dunwoody residents and provides access to over 13,000 vehicles travel each day. This project provides non-motorized connectivity between the neighborhoods and nearby public parks and commercial amenities located along this corridor.
The project was not without its pain points with many moving parts in a high-traffic area. Utility relocation and stormwater improvements were among the most complicated and time-consuming parts of the project. Work crews accomplished the following:
- Installed 54 new storm drains and 3,900 feet of stormwater pipe
- Moved and replaced 2,650 feet of gas supply line
- Relocated 22 utility poles with power, phone and cable lines
- Upgraded three traffic signals
- Paved using more than 450 truckloads of asphalt
This transformation isn’t just functional. It adds aesthetic appeal to this important corridor. The project features a new gateway sign at Chamblee Dunwoody Road and Cotillion Drive, enhancing location awareness and community pride. The project will also include public art. During a meeting in September, the Dunwoody Art Commission reviewed 28 submissions and chose a design by Struzik ART called “Human Interfusion.” Installation of the large-scale sculpture is planned for 2025.
History
Public information meetings were held in December 2014. Comments from the public were used by Council as the basis for approving the final design. This project required several utility companies to relocate underground and overhead utilities. These relocations began in 2021 and were completed in 2023. Upgrades to the gas main and water main along Chamblee Dunwoody Road were completed in 2022.
