Project details:
As part of the new Dunwoody Road Safety Action Plan, this project is focused on pedestrian and driver safety on Nandina Lane. Since 2017, a total of 51 crashes have been recorded at the intersection of Nandina and Mt. Vernon Road. Nine of those resulted in injuries, including a serious injury involving a pedestrian.
This project is consistent with the Dunwoody Village Master Plan. Goals include consistent driver compliance with stopping at the stop sign and yielding to pedestrians in the crosswalk.
Phase 1: In 2024, we closed the northbound direction on Nandina Lane between Mt. Vernon Road and the first driveway on Nandina Lane. The rest of Nandina remains open to two-way traffic. (See map)
Phase 2: Dunwoody’s Safe Streets Manager presented a proposal for Phase 2 during the Jan. 27, 2025, Dunwoody City Council meeting. The plan is to realign the southbound direction on Nandina Lane as it approaches Mt. Vernon Road to intersect at an angle closer to 90 degrees. This provides more visibility for pedestrians as they approach (pictured here). Phase 2 began in late May 2025 when crews removed the existing concrete island.
Beginning June 9, 2025, raised pavement markers, a few vertical tubular markers, and new striping will be added. The goal is to direct drivers’ attention to the geometry changes without adding too much visual clutter. The no-right turn restriction on Mt. Vernon at Nandina will remain.
