The tributaries to Nancy Creek within Brook Run Park were identified as stream restoration candidates in the 2018 Nancy Creek Watershed-Based Plan (WBP), created as a collaborative effort by local municipalities to address excessive bacteria and sediment loads within the watershed.

The WBP was created to meet the standard requirements for projects seeking State funding through 319(h) grants, streamlining the application process for qualifying projects. The City of Dunwoody is now applying for 319(h) grant funding to cover the construction costs for the first of several planned stream restoration projects in Brook Run Park.

The first project is planned along an 850-foot length of tributary near the Multi-Use Fields. The design for the stream restoration is currently in the concept stage.

What is Stream Restoration?

Stream restoration is the practice of repairing eroded, unstable stream channels using both engineered structures and natural methods. It is done to address sources of pollution and is commonly implemented as part of a wider watershed improvement plan.

Benefits:

  • Reduction of sediment entering the waterway from bank erosion
  • Provide habitat with restored riparian buffers, which also help to absorb and treat stormwater runoff
  • Protection of infrastructure, including community resources like walking trails
  • Increased resiliency against flooding

Demonstrating a Long-term Commitment to Improving Water Quality

Since its incorporation, the City of Dunwoody has made improvements within Brook Run Park that are supportive of future stream restoration projects. These improvements include:

  • 4 above ground Detention Ponds (off Barclay, at PCMS, near the Skate Park, Multi-use Fields pond)
  • 2 underground facilities (between the two Multi-use Fields, at the new Maintenance Facility)
  • 4 Water Quality Devices (Trash Catchers, Dog Park Hydrodynamic Vortex Separator, WQ units for the 2 Underground Stormwater Facilities).
  • 1 retention pond (North Parking Lot)

The investments made in Brook Run Park have created a protective environment in which stream restoration projects can function properly and provide long-term benefits to the Nancy Creek watershed.
