If you find a lost dog, the microchip scanning station can help you check for a registered microchip and identify the owner. There are two stations located in Dunwoody: outside near the main doors at Dunwoody City Hall (4800 Ashford Dunwoody Road) and at the Brook Run Dog Park (4770 N Peachtree Rd).
How to Scan for a Microchip
- Grab the scanner and hold the button to turn it on.
- Start scanning along the back of the dog's neck, near the base of the skull.
- Slowly move the scanner down the dog’s back to the base of the tail.
- If no chip is detected, scan down each leg, starting at the body and moving toward the feet.
If a Microchip Is Found
If the scanner detects a chip, the chip number will appear on the screen.
Next steps:
- Scan the QR code at the station or use this link to input the chip number.
- Review the “Microchip Enrolled With” results.
- Starting with the first company listed, which is typically the most recent registry, contact each company until you find the one with the pet owner’s current information.
If No Microchip Is Found
If the dog does not have a microchip, take these steps:
- Check for tags, including a rabies tag.
- If the dog has a rabies tag, contact the veterinary clinic that issued it. The clinic should have a record of the owner.
- Report the animal to the shelter by calling 404-294-2996 or visiting:
DeKalb County Animal Services
3280 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd.
Chamblee, GA 30341 - Post information about the found dog on Nextdoor and in local Facebook groups.
- Bring the animal to DeKalb County Animal Services, where it will be held for the legally required stray hold period. If the shelter is closed, please keep the animal safe until it reopens.
Safety Precautions
Approach lost dogs carefully. Chasing a frightened dog may cause it to run into traffic or react aggressively out of fear.
Watch for signs of fear or aggression, including:
- Growling
- Trembling
- Pinned ears
To help the dog feel safer:
- Sit down or crouch to appear less threatening
- Speak calmly
- Allow the dog to come to you
A trapped or scared dog may bite if it feels it cannot escape.
If the Dog Is Injured or Aggressive
If a dog appears severely injured or aggressive, do not try to catch it yourself. Call local animal control or police immediately.
