Furman, William official photoDunwoody, GA – Feb. 23, 2026 – The Dunwoody Police Department is saddened to announce the passing of Major William “Rusty” Furman after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Major Furman was one of the original members of the Dunwoody PoliceDepartment. He served at Marietta and Cobb County Police Departments prior to joining the Dunwoody Police Department, where he completed a decorated 28-year career in law enforcement. He was a leader, mentor, confidante and friend to everyone he worked with. Most importantly, he was a husband, father, son and brother to his family.

“Major Furman was an exceptional leader, a devoted public servant, and a deeply respected member of our department family. He fought his illness with the same courage he showed every day in uniform, and he will never be forgotten” ~Chief Mike Carlson.

His dedication and service will never be forgotten, and his absence has left a void that will not easily be filled. We are heartbroken and wrapping our arms around his family in love and support during this difficult time.

Please keep his family, friends and colleagues at the department in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Rusty.
