FEDERAL FLOOD INSURANCE NOW AVAILABLE IN CITY OF DUNWOODY

Dunwoody – November 30, 2009 – The City of Dunwoody is now a participant in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), a program offered through the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA). Dunwoody joins over 20,500 other communities nationwide able to purchase federally backed flood insurance. This availability follows Dunwoody’s adoption and enforcement of ordinances to reduce flood losses and acceptance by the NFIP.

Dunwoody residents will be able to purchase flood insurance up to the limits in accordance with the Regular Phase of the program. However, purchasers should be aware there is a 30-day waiting period, in most instances, prior to coverage going into effect. For single-family dwellings, the building coverage limit is $250,000 and the contents coverage limit is $100,000. Renters can also protect their belongings by purchasing contents coverage. For commercial properties, the building and contents coverage are both $500,000.

Lenders must require borrowers whose properties are located in a designated flood hazard area to purchase flood insurance as a condition of receiving a federally backed mortgage loan in accordance with the Federal Disaster Protection Act of 1973.

For additional information about the City of Dunwoody please contact Edie Damann, Marketing and PR Manager at edie.damann@dunwoodyga.gov. For additional information on FEMA or the NFIP visit the official FEMA website at www.fema.gov.
