ALL construction activities within the City of Dunwoody must be permitted through the Community Development Department. This ensures that all construction is done in accordance with the codes set forth by the City of Dunwoody, DeKalb County, and the State of Georgia.

The following types of work require permits that will need to be reviewed (list is not exhaustive):

  • New residential or commercial construction
  • Additions to existing residential or commercial construction (including decks and patios)
  • Sheds or accessory buildings
  • Interior renovations for commercial space (painting and flooring only do not require a building permit)
  • Deck or patio replacements
  • Retaining walls
  • Land disturbance
  • Exterior demolition
  • Swimming pools
  • Fire sprinkler and alarm work
  • Permanent Signs
  • Grease trap installation

The following types of work require over-the-counter permits (no review required, list is not exhaustive):

  • Interior renovations for residential space (painting and flooring only do not require a building permit, please note multi-family residential is treated as commercial and does require review)
  • General repairs to sheetrock or windows
  • Interior demolition
  • Mechanical, plumbing, or electrical work
  • Low Voltage electrical work
  • Roof repairs and replacements
  • Temporary Signs

Land Disturbance Permit

For all Commercial Projects & NEW Residential Homes.  For additions to existing Single-Family Homes, please see the Site Plan Requirements under the Single-Family Residential link below.

Commercial or Multi-Family Residential Building Permits

Please use the link above if your project is located in a commercial or multi-family zoning district or if your project is a commercial use in ANY residential zoning district.

Single-Family Residential Building Permits

This includes deck, pools, additions, storage sheds. Please use the link above if your project is a residential use in a single-family residential zoning district

For projects that have a General Contractor AND a Building Permit Number

Single Trade Permits

Please use the link above if your project does not require a full building project. Examples include: water heater, air conditioning and/or furnace replacement.
