Police Explorers
Founding Sponsor
On June 19, 2009 the Rotary Club of Dunwoody presented a $2,000 check to the Dunwoody Police Department to become the Founding Sponsor of the Dunwoody Police Department Explorer Program. According the Kathy Brandt, President of the Rotary Club of Dunwoody, “The Police Explorer program is very consistent with our goals of supporting our community and educating and developing children and young adults.” Thanks to the Rotary Club of Dunwoody, the Police Explorer program was established on July 2, 2009 as POST #702.
Law Enforcement Exploring is a worksite-based program for young men and women who have completed the eighth grade and are 14 years of age, or are 15 years of age but have not yet reached their 21st birthday. Exploring is governed by Learning for Life which is a division of the Boy Scouts of America.
Law Enforcement Explorer posts help youth to gain insight into a variety of programs that offer hands-on career activities. For young men and women who are interested in careers in the field of law enforcement, Exploring offers experiential learning with lots of fun-filled, hands-on activities that promote the growth and development of adolescent youth.
The Dunwoody Explorers meet on a weekly basis to train in different aspects of law enforcement. The Explorers also have opportunities to volunteer in their community at special events and functions. In 2009 the Explorers participated in the Dunwoody High School Homecoming parade, the Dunwoody Fall Festival, and helped wrap and give out presents at the Christmas for Kids program.
Learning for Life and Boy Scouts of America offer several types of scholarships every year to Law Enforcement Explorers ranging from $500 to $1000. Explorers accumulate community service hours that make them eligible for the scholarships as well as nationally recognized awards that will assist in building solid resumes.
The requirements to become a Dunwoody Police Explorer are:
- Must be between the ages of 14 to 21 and have completed the 8th grade.
- Complete an application
- Complete a thorough background check
- Possess and maintain a 2.0 GPA
- Pass an oral interview
