Police Department News

The Dunwoody Police Department is proud to announce the department’s participation in the upcoming 2010 Polar Plunge benefitting Special Olympics Georgia.  This is a great opportunity to raise funds and awareness for the 23,000 athletes of Special Olympics Georgia.  A number of officers, and Councilman Shortal, have pledged to raise $50 for the opportunity to plunge in Lake Lanier on February 20, 2010.  Of course they are not limited to just $50!

Chief Grogan is the State Director for the Law Enforcement Torch Run program which raises funds and awareness for Special Olympics Georgia.  Law Enforcement Officers from across the state raise funds throughout the year with various fundraising activities.  Statewide last year, police officers and agencies across the state raised over $600,000.  Their goal is to reach $1,000,000 within the next couple of years.

To help realize the goal, the LETR Executive Council has added a statewide event for next year.  The first ever 2010 Polar Plunge benefitting Special Olympics Georgia will be held on February 20, 2010 at Lake Lanier Islands.  Anyone who raises at least $50 can plunge into Lake Lanier and all proceeds go to Special Olympics Georgia.  There are many great incentives if you raise even more.  This is where we need your help!

The department has created a Dunwoody Police Department team on the fundraising page for Special Olympics and all team plungers have joined the team with their personal fundraising page.  Our goal is for the Dunwoody Police Department team to lead all police departments in total funds raised.  Please click on this link if you would like to make a donation to any team member:

If you would like to join our team and plunge with us, please do so!  (Don’t worry, you can plunge with your toe or go all the way in!)  Another great way to help would be to form your own team.  This could be done with a business, association, youth group, club, family or just about any other type of group.  You can also pass this information on to your family and friends who can join your team as well.  Listed below is a link to the 2010 Polar Plunge Plunger Tool Kit which explains what the event is about and how to start your own team.  Please consider passing this information on to others you know who might be willing to help.

We would welcome an opportunity to come talk about the event with any group who might be interested in starting their own team.  This is a great opportunity to do a service project which will certainly benefit a group of individuals in need.  The 2010 Polar Plunge benefitting Special Olympics Georgia has secured two corporate sponsors and are looking for additional sponsors, including a Title Sponsor.  Sponsorship information is on the polar plunge website as well.

1st Annual Christmas for Kids
On 121709, the Dunwoody Police hosted its 1st Annual Christmas for Kids at the North Peachtree Baptist Church from 6-8PM.  Over the past several months, officers from the department have been registering families that have been less fortunate this past year.  The police department received an overwhelming response from the community to support this project.  Santa Clause and his helpers were able to pass out over 1,000 gifts to the registered families.  Rishi Gowda, a 7 year old Dunwoody resident, donated his birthday gifts this year to help the department accomplish their goal.  The Dunwoody Police would like to thank the citizens of Dunwoody and the many volunteers that made this mission a huge success.

Christmas for Kids 2009 - An Officer's Thank You to Dunwoody Community

A Note of Thanks to Dunwoody Community,

Dunwoody Police Department's first annual Christmas for Kids can go down in the books as being an absolute success. The idea was to bring a little Christmas joy and happiness to a few of Dunwoody's less privileged children. However, instead of just a few children, well over 100 received a bag full of gifts and experienced a Christmas event that they are sure to remember for years to come.

This event was only made possible by the tremendous outpouring of support from citizens, businesses, and neighborhoods. There were many individuals and groups who demonstrated what this time of year is all about and without them this campaign would not have been able to make so many children happy this Christmas.

Christmas for Kids 2009 is just one of many community projects and campaigns that are to come and we are looking forward to working side by side with you in order to make our City of Dunwoody an even greater place to call home.

A heartfelt thanks goes out to all volunteers and sponsors who made this event possible!

    Sincerely,

    Officer F. Espinoza

A Heart for the Hearts of Dunwoody

A Heart for the Hearts of Dunwoody

Dunwoody -  August 10, 2009 - Dunwoody Planning Commission member, Bob Lundsten, has launched a campaign to outfit all of the Dunwoody Police Department cars with a Automated External Defibrillator (AED) device.  In addition, he wants to make sure the police department and City Hall are outfitted as well.  Mr. Lundsten understands about the importance of these lifesaving devices.  Bob’s wife, Kathy, collapsed 9 years ago and went into sudden cardiac arrest.

Mr. Lundsten has formed Hearts of Dunwoody, which is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation to help raise the money needed to fund this effort.  Mr. Lundsten hopes to raise $50,000 by November.  At this time, various vendors are being evaluated.

The Dunwoody Police Department would like to thank Mr. Lundsten for all he is doing to raise these funds which will help make the City of Dunwoody a safer place.  If you would like to make a tax deductible donation, please contact Bob Lundsten at boblundsten@gmail.com or by phone at 404-358-4147.

    Wal-Mart Gives $2,500 Grant

Local Wal-Mart Gives $2,500 Grant to Police Explorers

Dunwoody – August 10, 2009 - Wal-Mart presented a grant to the Dunwoody Police Department in the amount of $2,500. On July 17th, Chief Billy Grogan accepted the check from store manager Mike Garner and several of the store employees.

They currently assist, train, and work with the police officers to better serve the citizens of Dunwoody.

Wal-Mart is to be commended for their efforts in giving back to the community in a way that reaches young people which will have a positive impact in the community for years to come.

    National Night Out at Target

National Night Out Sponsored by Local Target

Dunwoody - August 4, 2009 - Target, a corporate sponsor of National Night Out (NNO), hosted the 1st ever NNO event at the Super Target, 100 Perimeter Center Place on Tuesday, August 4th.  The event lasted from 7-9:00p.m. in the parking lot of Target.  The Dunwoody Police Department partnered with Target for this event and encouraged citizen participation.  Representatives from Dekalb County Police and Dekalb County Fire also attended.

This Tuesday night marked the 26th annual National Night Out event.   However, this was Dunwoody’s first NNO since we began on April 1, 2009.  National Night Out is a national event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch.  More information about NNO events can be found at  http://www.nationalnightout.org/ .

National Night Out brings the community and public safety together to address drug and crime issues in the their neighborhoods.  Target is a national  sponsor for this event.  Target had raffles, games, and give a ways.  In addition, several businesses, including Doc Greens, Cold Stone Creamery and Bonefish Grill, donated food.  Lamonique Collins, executive team leader of asset protection, contacted the Dunwoody Police to help out with the event.  Chief Billy Grogan, Sgt. Mike Carlson, Sgt. Jason Witcher, Officer Fidel Espinoza, and Officer William Furman were present at the event speaking to the community.  Both Target and the Dunwoody Police were pleased with the turn out for the event.  Approximately 125-150 people joined us throughout the night.  It was a great opportunity for members of the police department to interact with and get to know members of the community.

The Dunwoody Police Department strongly encourages neighborhoods to consider organizing a National Night Out event in 2010.

    Bears for Kids

The Dunwoody Woman’s Club recently delivered 100 stuffed animals to the Dunwoody Police Department to give to children in need that the police department comes into contact with.  A stuffed animal can help a child, who has been traumatized or otherwise negatively affected, get through the situation.  Barbara Pryor, with the Dunwoody Woman’s Club, delivered the critters and had this to say, “We are glad to be able to help you and your fellow officers ease children's fears when caught in stressful situations.”
