When the City of Dunwoody incorporated on December 1, 2008, one of the Mayor and Council’s first official actions was to establish a permanent advisory board on sustainability, the Dunwoody Sustainability Commission. The Commission meets the second Thursday of every month at 7:45 a.m. in the City Council Chambers, 41 Perimeter Center East, Dunwoody, GA 30346. Contact staff members at Rebecca.keefer@dunwoodyga.gov or Becca.timms@dunwoodyga.gov. Contact Commission members at sustainability.commission@dunwoodyga.gov.
Mission
The Sustainability Commission’s mission is to:
"Assist the City of Dunwoody to set an example by conserving energy, investing in renewable energy, conserving water, conserving fuel, reducing waste and protecting and restoring the community’s natural resources. Promote measures that encourage Dunwoody to work towards reducing the environmental footprint of the government through its policies, practices, buildings and fleets. Promote measures that encourage our community to reduce its environmental impact by providing assistance in public education and outreach on sustainability."
Living and Learning: Smart Choices for a Smart Community
The Living and Learning program aims to teach community members how they can live more sustainably. Each month will have a theme geared towards sustainable living, and information and resources will be provided. For each theme, there will be a list of resources and a “citizen science” section. Citizen science is an opportunity to learn ways to conserve resources through games, activities, and hands on experiences. We will have at least one community event related to each monthly theme, such as a recycling event or a stream monitoring workshop. This section of the website will be updated throughout the year as new resources and events are added.
Sustainability Plan
The City of Dunwoody will be embarking on a sustainability planning process in 2012. Stay tuned for more information regarding meetings and events!
Green Communities Program
The Green Communities Program is a voluntary certification program to recognize and promote local governments that are leading the way to sustainability by reducing their environmental footprint. Certification can be achieved by adopting eco-friendly policies and ordinances to minimize environmental impacts of both the City and the community.
In May 2011, we submitted our Silver Level Green Communities application to the Atlanta Regional Commission. The Green Communities checklist was submitted full of documentation for each of the measures we have addressed to this point.
On December 7, 2011, the City of Dunwoody was honored to receive the Green Communities Silver Level Certification from the Atlanta Regional Commission in recognition of its efforts to reduce Dunwoody’s environmental footprint. The sustainable policies and ordinances adopted by City Council have propelled Dunwoody to the Silver Level certification and have impacted all departments of the City. The City officially received the award in a ceremony held that afternoon at the Atlanta Regional Commission offices in Atlanta.
In light of this achievement, the Commission continues in its pursuit of reducing Dunwoody’s environmental footprint by adopting policies and practices. Click on the Green Communities Measures below to see the measures we have fulfilled.

Committees
After receiving Silver Level Certification, the Sustainability Commission decided to engage the community by breaking into smaller, niche groups that would enable community members to join the conversation. The Sustainability Commission hosts six different committees that serve to focus on specific aspects of sustainability. Citizens and community volunteers are welcome to join a committee. Please let us know if you’re interested in a Committee or our specific tasks. The Sustainability Commission committees are as follows:
